Cairns Show Association and Business Laision Association Billboard Competition SENIOR ART STUDENTS - BILLBOARD ART COMPETITION - Showcasing our Future Artists The competition was offered to secondary Art students in years 11 and 12 in the Far North and the opportunity to participate was well received by the schools. The categories this year were Abstract, Original Graphic Design, FNQ Community and Indigenous. You will be able to see 4 works of art displayed on a 12metre billboard located at the Scott Street entrance of Cairns Show Grounds. Each year this competition will assist with the development and promotion of our young regional artists and has received long term corporate support from Ergon Energy, Think Office Technology, the Showbag Warehouse and Allsigns Printing and Design. The Annual Cairns Show is able to provide a platform to promote local talents to over 70,000 people over three days and in this instance the ability to showcase local artworks throughout the year to the drivers and passengers of over 8,000 vehicles travelling along Scott Street each day. Don't miss checking out this artwork during your time at the Cairns Show this year! THE WINNERS Category: FNQ COMMUNITY Student Lisa Goodwin - Kuranda District State College Year 12 Aspirations: Graphic Designer Title of Piece: "Chase that Feeling" Artists Statement My inspiration for "Chase that Feeling" came from the actual word "graphics", and then the associated visuals for me of the Cairns Show were the circus, and so I developed my design from there. My future career aspirations are to pursue Graphics Design at a tertiary level. I have been studying art throughout high school with this goal in mind. Category: INDIGENOUS Student Dakota Stewart - Kuranda District State College Year 12 Aspirations: Continue to change Title of Piece: "Dreamtime Snake" Artists Statement The rainbow serpent is a powerful symbol of my culture and it is a visual dreamtime animal that really stands out and is recognisable to most Australians. My future career aspirations continue to change as I think carefully about which talents I want to spend my life developing, as I am still equally passionate about a number of areas at this stage. I've been encouraged to pursue my many artistic talents as I've had lots of in-school success in this area. Category: ABSTRACT Student Michelle Tierney – Western Cape College Year 12 Aspirations: Animator Title of Piece: "Unnamed" Artists Statement The inspiration for the work first came from prostitution and how women use their bodies to gain what they desire – money. I wanted to create a dark fantasy artwork and I used mermaids to symbolise prostitution as they use their bodies to lure sailors to their death. To gain a better understanding of the Myth of mermaids, I began to research them and why they were killing the sailors; so they could steal their valuables and eat their flesh. I have always loved art, in particular drawing and illustration and I would like to continue drawing after school and enter the Art industry as an animator. Category: ORIGINAL GRAPHIC DESIGN Student Kayla Papagelou –St Andrews Catholic College Aspirations: A career in acting or Psychology Title of Piece: "Morte e'sogni" Artists Statement The focus of this unit is 'Ideal World', which could be interpreted through means of a personal concept artistically portraying the individual's ideal existence, or could be taken to the next level depicting a socio-cultural issue. The chosen context for this art piece was a personal interpretation, an ideal world through the imagination – the essence of dreams. This selected concept entails that of a spiritual, personal and psychological realm. It expresses the imagination and dreams through a world of magic and death – and that despite its dread can be beautiful. It is a journey into that of the subconscious mind involving the essence of both dreams and nightmares.
